If you use a mix (like 50% cotton/50% polyester) the bleach will not be able to turn the fabric bright white. If you use 100% cotton t-shirt, the bleach will turn your drawing white or close to it. Take several layers of newspaper and put it inside your t-shirt so that any bleach you put on top of your shirt doesn’t leak down to the back of your shirt. Lay newspaper completely over your work surface. We tried several other bleach pens and they hardly worked. Trust us, make sure it says “for whites” and make sure it is from CLOROX. Unscrew the cap and practice using the pen on a scrap piece of paper. Really shake it good to mix up the gel and bleach inside the pen. Make sure your bleach pen lid is on tightly and shake up the pen. The bleach will spread out and can mess up complicated designs.
IMPORTANT: Start the design at the top and work your way down. Place the t-shirt directly in front of you and start tracing the chalk design with your bleach pen. Once you feel comfortable with using the pen, you can start on your t-shirt. If there are any bubbles, gently pop them and go over the design again.
We left the light blue swirl shirt overnight and the white was really bright. If you leave it on for 30 minutes you will get a lighter design and if you leave it on for 2 hours, the bleach has longer to work and the design will be more vivid. Once you are finished with tracing the design, let the shirt sit and let the bleach work its magic on the shirt.
